DC3 is a volumetric image analysis tool. It uses a 3D deformable surface model to segment an object of interest. It can be used for many medical image modalities such as MRI, CT, and Ultrasound. Several features of the segmented model such as volume and surface can be calculated by DC3. Following is an introduction on how to run the program.

1.  There are two windows opened when running DC3: the main window and the zoom window. The main window is divided into three parts; the left display window shows the over-view of the image, the right display window shows the same enlarged scene; the bottom of the main window shows messages regarding the current status of the program. The zoom window shows the perpendicular slice specified by the white dashed-line.

2.  The load button under the file menu can be used to load the images from a specified folder within the file system. After the images are loaded, one may modify the gray scale bar underneath the left display window to get an image with good contrast and intensity. Using the middle button of the mouse, clicking on the orthogonal images displayed on the right display window and the zoom window, one can find an appropriate section of the volumetric image data set.

3.  The initial polygon for the desired structure can then be loaded from the contour menu.

4.  The initial polygon is loaded in the following example.

5.  Now the batch file can be run for hippocampus segmentation.

6.  After a few minutes the segmentation result is ready. Use the middle mouse button to navigate through the segmented model and get two perpendicular views of it. There are several options under the view menu that can be used to get the volume of the segmented model and its total surface.
