The following is instructions on configuring a PC to have both Windows XP and Solaris installed. Only one will be available at a time, you will need to reboot the system to switch between the operating systems.
System Requirements:
Intel-based PC with 2 disks
Windows XP installation Media
PartitionMagic (with BootMagic included)
Solaris 9 installation Media
Instructions
- Load Windows XP on the first disk.
- Install Partition Magic.
- Partition space at end of 1st disk for BootMagic.
- Install BootMagic.
- Configure BootMagic to have 2nd operating system on disk 2.
- If possible, back up the 1st disk.
-
Install Solaris 9 on the 2nd disk.
Warning
It is very important that you understand how to install Solaris on the 2nd disk, including the boot block. The default is to install the operating system and book block on the 1st disk. This will destroy the Windows portion of the system. Assuming both disks are on the same controller (the usual case), the 1st disk will be named c0d0pn, the 2nd disk, which will be used for Solaris, will be c0d1pn. The number after the d indicates the disk to use.
-
Once Solaris is installed, you will need to change the options in the Configuration Assistant to enable auto-booting from the 2nd disk. The Configuration Assistant will run every time Solaris is booted, until this step is preformed.
-
When the system is started to rebooted, an option to boot Windows or Solaris will be presented.
